Each year the London Surf / Film  Festival curates a gallery show featuring surfing’s most talented creatives, challenging perceptions of what surf art is all about.

LINES ON WATER

For 2014  LS/FF celebrated the art of storytelling and the power of narrative in surf filmmaking. For all great works have one thing in common – they take the viewer on a journey, convey a message, tell a tale. The best of those finely turned phrases and iconic lines stay with us, go on to become sound bites in our every day living – cultural reference points shared with like minds.

We approached some of the UK’s most exciting creatives and tasked them with crafting a work that celebrates the power of words – choosing a phrase or a line from a film that resonates with them. They produced an astonishing body of work, represented in many formats; from graphic phrases, illustrations, cartoons, charcoal and oil through to complex folded paper. Each work of art was presented as a one off A2 print that was exhibited in the gallery for the duration of the festival and was then auctioned for charity.

Our contributing artists were: Richard Bull / Bull, Rich Braham / Whale Submarine, Nick Radford / Frootful, Chris Dorning / Moot, Ben Cook / Littoral Drifter, Ed Syder, Steve Wintercroft / Wintercroft, Gemma Chalmers, Zander Grinfeld / Venn, The Lab and Leo Stockley.

For 2015 the festival will again be celebrating an aspect of surf filmmaking and inviting a selection of creatives to contribute to the gallery. Details of the theme and collaborating artist will be announced soon.
